Frequently asked questions about CES

CES (Customer Effort Score) measures how easy customers found it to get something done—such as resolving a support issue, completing onboarding, or finishing a purchase. A common format is a 1–7 agreement survey (e.g. from "Strongly disagree" to "Strongly agree" that the company made it easy to handle the situation). Unlike CSAT, which measures satisfaction, CES focuses on friction; less friction is strongly linked to loyalty and retention.

With a 1–7 scale, CES is the mean score across all responses—equivalent to weighting each point by how many people chose it:

CES = Sum of (Score × Number of Responses) ÷ Total Responses

Example: 4 responses: two people chose 6, one chose 5, one chose 3.

Sum of scores = 6 + 6 + 5 + 3 = 20. CES = 20 ÷ 4 = 5.0.

On this agreement-style scale, a higher average usually means more customers felt the interaction was easy.
